GST Return Filing Basics: GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and QRMP Explained

By Zorvex Enterprises · 4 October 2026 · 6 min read

Once a business is registered under GST, filing returns on time is a recurring duty. This overview explains the main returns in simple terms. Thresholds, rates and due dates change by notification, so always verify the current position on the official GST portal or with a professional.

GSTR-1: your sales return

GSTR-1 reports the outward supplies you made, that is, your sales invoices. It feeds your customers' input tax credit, so accuracy matters.

GSTR-3B: your summary and payment return

GSTR-3B is where you declare your tax liability, claim input tax credit and pay the tax. It is generally filed every month by regular taxpayers.

QRMP scheme

Eligible small taxpayers can opt for the Quarterly Return Monthly Payment (QRMP) scheme. Returns are filed quarterly while tax is paid monthly. Eligibility depends on turnover limits that the government can revise.

Composition scheme

Eligible small businesses may choose the composition scheme, which has simpler compliance with tax paid at a fixed percentage of turnover. It has restrictions, such as limits on claiming input tax credit, so check whether it suits you.

Input tax credit and GSTR-2B

Input tax credit lets you reduce your tax by the GST paid on business purchases. Matching your purchase records with GSTR-2B helps you claim only what is eligible and avoids mismatches.

How to avoid late fees and notices

  • Note due dates at the start of the year and set reminders a week early.
  • Reconcile sales and purchases every month, not at year end.
  • File nil returns when there is no activity, because non-filing still creates default.
  • Keep invoices, e-way bills and bank records organised.
  • Respond to notices within the stated time.

Do GeM sellers need to be extra careful?

Yes. If you sell through GeM, accurate GST invoicing and regular returns are important because buyers and the portal rely on your compliance record.
