On-Page vs Off-Page SEO: What Each Does and How to Use Both

By Zorvex Enterprises · 12 October 2026 · 7 min read

If you have ever asked "why is my website not on Google?", the answer almost always sits in one of two places: what is on your website (on-page SEO) or what the rest of the internet says about it (off-page SEO). Strong rankings need both, plus a technically healthy site underneath.

What is on-page SEO?

On-page SEO is everything you control on your own pages. The goal is to make each page the clearest, most helpful answer to one search topic.

  • Title tag and meta description: the headline and summary people see in search results. Put the main keyword near the start and write for humans.
  • Headings: one H1 per page, then H2 and H3 headings that structure the content logically.
  • Content quality: original, specific and complete. Answer the questions a buyer would really ask.
  • Internal links: link related pages together with descriptive anchor text.
  • Images: compressed, with descriptive file names and alt text.
  • Schema markup: structured data that helps search engines understand your business, FAQs and articles.

What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO makes sure search engines can crawl, understand and load your site. It covers page speed, mobile usability, HTTPS, XML sitemaps, robots.txt, canonical tags, redirects and fixing broken links. A site with great content but technical problems can stay invisible, so this is often the fastest win on older websites.

What is off-page SEO?

Off-page SEO builds trust and authority outside your website. The main signal is backlinks: links from other relevant sites to yours. Quality matters far more than quantity. A handful of links from genuine, relevant websites is worth more than hundreds from spammy directories.

  • Relevant backlinks from industry websites, publications and partners
  • Consistent business listings (name, address, phone) across directories
  • Google Business Profile and genuine customer reviews
  • Guest articles and useful resources that others want to cite
  • Brand mentions and active social profiles

Avoid paid link farms, mass directory spam and fake reviews. They can lead to ranking penalties and are not worth the risk.

How the three work together

Think of a shop. On-page SEO is the shop's layout and signboard. Technical SEO is a working door, electricity and a clear address. Off-page SEO is the reputation the shop earns in the neighbourhood. You need all three before customers keep coming.

A simple order of work

  1. Fix technical issues so your site can be crawled and loads fast on mobile.
  2. Research keywords and assign one clear topic to each important page.
  3. Improve titles, headings, content and internal links page by page.
  4. Set up Google Business Profile if you serve a local area.
  5. Build relevant backlinks steadily, month after month.
  6. Track rankings, traffic and enquiries, then improve what works.

SEO is a long-term effort. Many sites see movement in a few months, and stronger results build over six to twelve months depending on competition.
